I'd like to see automatic modulation detection for the ham bands. I know CW and SSB when I hear them, but digital signals are harder to ID. sigidwiki.com,is okay, but what if we could do it with software? When will we have a waterfall that automatically tags signals with their modulation. FT8 is running out of space on it's recommended frequencies and will soon start appearing elsewhere in the bands. One reason more people don't use digital modes like Contestia and Throb is that it's hard to find other users by listening. This would make a great thesis project for an EE student - using AI and machine learning to analyze a whole HF band from an SDR and tag signals by type. Google Photos can recognize and group faces, surely this is achievable, too.

Hey John,

You are absolutely right, facial recognition seems much more complex than digtal signals in the spectrum. In Fldigi there is a setting called rxid/txid. That will send a common signal at the beginning of each transmission. Its really cool and it would be nice if more people used it.

Another great tool to check out is sorcerer

http://www.kd0cq.com/2013/07/sorcerer-decoder-download/

Its somewhat automatic, but more importantly handles a lot of comercial modes that fldigi amd the ham tools dont.

There are a couple different companies going after the identification via AI as well. Deepsig.io comes to mind.

Thanks for listening and hope to see you on the air. Kk5fo

I'd love to hear more about how to use hostapd and VNC to use it as a wireless monitor/keyboard. The show just kinda glossed over it but I'm assuming there's some apt-get installs I need to do first...

Thanks & 73!

It was mentioned in the show that radios are specifically banned as carry-on by TSA. This is not true. Check TSA for yourself, but please don’t be unduly discouraged from traveling with a radio.
