George, I don't know about your Talkpod thermal issues, but I think I do know why your radios don't hear each other. The Taolkpod people "cleverly" default their radios to use a squelch tone. If you want to use the thing in GMRS with other GMRS radios on the same channel you have to turn the stupid tone off in the software. Ask me how I know. I don't have the thermal issues that will be keeping you warm this winter but I have concluded that the radio, at least on Ham bands, makes a Baofeng look like the Mercedes of radios. I did have a similar thermal issue with another Chinese 2m/70cm radio (TYT) but returned it for a replacement. The replacement worked fine.

It would be interesting if instead of saying how complex building an amplifier is, the guest would say...well I built one, and since I have no commercial interest here is the design, BOM, and some photos so that hams also can build their own open source hardware. Not really clear why there is no interest in the ham community to support open source hardware designs.

I don't have the thermal issue with my Talkpod, it works fine.. now I haven't tried the same room experiment, but I wonder if you need a firmware upgrade? I got the A36 mainly for the airband receive, and it works pretty well so far for that, I bought one of those Quansheng talkies and the AM air-band is horrid on that thing.. not sure a firmware upgrade could help that thing!!!
