Ham Radio Workbench Podcast Episodes

2018 Holiday Shopping Show Part 1

Picture
It started as a normal episode - We invited Rod Hardman VA3ON and John Jacobs W7DBO (of the Field Radio Podcast) on to talk Holiday Shopping for Hams - one of our most favorite episodes to do each year.  During this session, we showed no restraint whatsoever because we were at the 4 hour mark when we stopped recording!  While we know you generally like long episodes, we thought we’d split this one into two parts. In part 1, we cover our workbenches and radio gear (topical since Black Friday is just around the corner).  In our next episode, we will cover radio accessories and gear for the workbench.

Now through the end of the year, save 25% on the 4-Port Coax Relay Switch - https://www.hamradioworkbench.com/store/p6/4-Port_Coax_Relay_Partial_Kit.html

Great show! Just one question/request what would your radio recommendations for someone who travels by motorcycle. Something that can be thrown/carried in a saddle bag or trunk bag.

Thanks.

Hi Wayne,
Great question !
For HF, the radio that pops to my mind is the FT-891 because it's a full featured, 100 watt mobile, remote head, and it's less than $600 !! What a deal.
For VHF/UHF, there are many choices. I would consider the Kenwood TM-D710A. It's a great radio with a big-ish control head. Smaller version is the TM-D71A. Both great radios. I would also consider a digital radio. Decide which network. D-STAR / Fusion / DMR. I have all three and prefer DMR but all have pros and cons.
Check out Autocom headsets. They are awesome. If you need more help, a good friend has done mobile ham radio on his bike for several years. I can put you in touch. Shoot me your email.

Thanks for the reply George,

I would appreciate the assistance from your friend. I have been looking at the Yaes ft891, since it looks like it would stand up to the use and nature of carrying it in a saddle bag. My email is wcmcmullen@gmail.com.

Thanks again,
Wayne NE3AT

Hi guys-what was the model number of the Midland FRS radio you all were discussing? I’m the radio coordinator for our local CERT team, and although we have a lot of hams, not all are licensed! WE have some FRS radios but they’re pretty useless being 1/2 watt. Hoping the 2 W might make a difference, plus AA batteries and USB charging is good. Thanks. I enjoy the show
